Nichelle Newsletter: Brown Sugar

Chris Raab, wrote Afro-Netizen. Substance. | Leaving one's comfort zone, in response to his experience at a panel discussion that occurred here in NYC. The post also appeared on Personal Democracy Forum. It's amazing that given how many "minority" bloggers are in the NYC area, the organizers of Concerts for Change and Cosmopolity.com could not find another black, brown, latino or [ choose your ethnic o racial allegiance ] blogger to attend the panel.

If diversity and inclusiveness were truly important to the organizers of this event, the panel and audience would have averred this. Clearly, it did not.

If the whitefolk in the audience who I made uncomfortable truly believed in inclusiveness, they would commit to doing something -- anything -- to address the segregation which they in part help maintain by their complacency. In other words, they would have to take a leap into the unknown -- that is, real diversity, where the majority of people of color in their presence are of the same or higher social status.

And it is indeed a leap. Woody Allen and the cast of 'Friends' aren't the only New Yorkers who can experience a white Manhattan, if they wish to. The fact of the matter is that most white people live in a segregated world of their own making, and the only thing keeping them from jumping into the mix is the will to do so. Maybe before Google, I'd cut my white compatriots with no Black friends or acquaintances some slack. But, damn, just Google "blackfolk" and "Manhattan" and if you don't come up with something germane within 5 minutes, you're either an imbecile or full of shit.

For this reason, Nichelle Newsletter and Culture Kitchen present our inaugural event of the Brown Blog Series on Sunday April 10, 2005. It's time to desmensar the blogosphere and show them where the political agitated melanin is at.

And yes, we'd like people all over the country to take heed and start their own flavas of Brown Bloggers. Here's the first ever, Brown Bloggers Meetup. Now run with it and make your own. Heck, I'll even fly in if you tell me well in advance. So go, get going if you can't make it to NYC this April, May, June, July ...

'The fact of the matter is that most white people live in a segregated world of their own making'

Totally agree, it's time to start living up to Martin Luther King's dream and make this society color blind. If we embrace diversity we will all be better off for it.

I wish I could be there too. We need to start something like that in Texas.

seems like an interesting event. incidentally, as a woman of color it's a problem for me that race and gender are always examined separately. we should all be concerned about each other's underrepresentation. women make up a large portion of the blogging population yet continually get marginalized. i have a post about this here (in the second half of the post): http://www.xanga.com/item.aspx?user=leenawords&tab=weblogs&uid=200565736

Texica, Geo : Start your own meetups! take the name, create a chapter in your area and spread the word.

LatinoP : Ay mi'jo, yu haf a problem comin to Loisaida ;-?

Jeff : What is most ironic about melanin-challenged liberals is that they do not see themselves as prejudiced. Ha!

Leena : Nichelle and I will be also putting together a "Blogging Sheroes" series.

More to come ... if the flu doesn't kill me.

Man, if I can get the time off, I'm there.

Actually, I'm glad to see this, I've got a related effort happening on my blog with Black and Latin women in web design, a response to a similar point.
