Join us to hear Cliff Braddock, Director of Energy Business Development describe the Austin's Climate Protection Plan. Then learn about an innovative on-site energy system that the City's electric utility, Austin Enegy, provided at one of its customer's sites, the new Dell Children's Hospital. Austin Energy and this new healthcare customer, have set a new standard in energy performance and environmental stewardship, with the hosptial on track to be the first LEED Platinum healtcare in the world, thanks in large measure to the Austin Energy on-site energy system.

Presented by Cliff Braddock, Director Energy Business Development, Austin Energy

Green Technology Breakthroughs . . .

§ Hydro Energy from Water Pipelines - Boulder, Colorado has incorporated eight hydroelectric generators with a combined rated capacity of 20.1 megawatts into the city’s municipal water system with minimal environmental impact since the water supply infrastructure was already in place. These small hydro plants convert the water pressure developed within water transmission pipelines as Boulder’s municipal water supplies are delivered down into the city from their source in the mountains high above Boulder. The turbine-generators were installed adjacent to pressure reducing valves that are necessary for proper water supply operations, but that waste this source of energy. The hydro plants generate about 45 million kilowatt-hours of electricity a year that is sold to Xcel Energy for about $2 million per year. Presenter: Carol Ellinghouse - Water Resources Coordinator, Boulder Colorado

Addressing Climate Change for Sustainable and Profitable Business, Denver, CO

27 Feb 2008 - 9:00am
29 Feb 2008 - 5:01pm

Addressing Climate Change for Sustainable and Profitable Business

February 27 - February 29, 2008
Denver, Colorado

The rules of business are changing. Climate change is at the height of media attention and has become an important part of current business trends. The 2008 Sustainable Opportunities Summit will explore how companies can financially benefit from becoming more engaged in addressing climate change.

As evidence mounts that human activity is contributing to global warming, many leading businesses are taking meaningful steps to address the climate challenge. In the process, they are realizing significant opportunities by creating new sought-after products, realigning the way they operate, and reducing their energy costs. Companies are finding that managing the risk of climate change and lowering their impact on the environment allows them to gain investor confidence, reduce their exposure to non-compliance, and increase their profits.

In a carbon-constrained world, the political, economic and legal rules governing commerce are certain to change. Colorado’s Governor Ritter has made a commitment to establish a New Energy Economy. Policy, legislative and regulatory shifts are all being considered at the state and national levels.

The 2008 Sustainable Opportunities Summit brings together corporate leaders, entrepreneurs, and venture capitalists from across Colorado and the nation in a unique forum to assess the growing opportunities created by climate change.

Centralized Solar for Electric Generation, Denver, CO

13 Feb 2008 - 9:00am
14 Feb 2008 - 12:00pm

Centralized Solar for Electric Generation
February 13 - 14, 2008
Denver, CO

Emissions-free centralized solar power is a good match against peak air conditioning load, and it becomes a more attractive source in view of its independence of shrinking water resources and rising fuel costs.

Today, US utilities operate about 420 MW of centralized solar generating capacity in California, Nevada, and Colorado. 80% of this capacity has operated efficiently for over 20 years. Using today’s technologies, NREL projects that this capacity could jump to 4,000MW, economically, by 2015, and to between 30,000 and 80,000 MW by 2030, depending on the cost of carbon emissions.

To get there, utilities face significant transmission and land-use challenges. The Centralized Solar conference will address:

* Status of the technologies
* Performance requirements
* Power purchase agreements
* Selling RECs vs. selling energy
* Load matching and storage
* Siting and transmission
* Virtual systems
* How solar differs from wind

Grand Hyatt Denver
1750 Welton Street
Denver, CO 80202

Call 303-295-1234 for reservations and mention the EUCI Conference to get the group rate.

See agenda here.
