The power of wrinkles

I can't believe I am going to say this ... but Ann Althouse knocked it out of the park today when she defended Hillary Clinton's wrinkles

My first reaction to that picture is simple disbelief. How can she suddenly look that much older? I know Presidents age horribly in their few years in office, but she's not President yet, and this seems to have happened overnight. Did some treatment wear off?

But here's my second reaction, on reflection: We make high demands on women. A picture like this of a male candidate would barely register. Fred Thompson always looks this bad, and people seem to think he's handsome. We need to get used to older women and get over the feeling that when women look old they are properly marginalized as "old ladies." If women are to exercise great power, they will come into that power in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. We must — if we care about the advancement of women — accommodate our vision and see a face like this as mature, experienced, serious — the way we naturally and normally see men's faces.

I have the sneaking suspicion that image is photoshopped; which would add a whole new layer of sexism over the fact that republicans have been dancing around it as proof she's toast.

That picture is not going to kill Hillary Clinton's campaign. Her politics? Quite probably. The morally corrupt bunch who will stoop to nothing to save her candidacy? That's a whole 'nother thing.

Osama's Beard of War (and maybe vanity too)

Even mass murdering lunatics can feel insecure about their looks --and use the Q'ran to hit the Grecian Formula. Yet what counter-terrorism" "experts" are reading into Osama's metrosexual attempt to hide his graying hair reads like a Seinfeld parody of the H.A.T.M or hot ass terrorist mess :

Bin Laden appears in the video with a trimmed beard that is apparently dyed black, hiding the streaks of gray seen in previous footage, and wears a beige cloak over a white robe.

According to Azzam Tamimi, head of the London-based Institute of Islamic Political Thought, the beard dye is a "sign of war."

The rigorous Salafi Islamic school to which bin Laden belongs "condones this dye only in preparation for war," he said.

A US intelligence official speaking on condition of anonymity said agencies believe the video is authentic and was produced as recently as August because of a reference to the 62nd anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima on August 6.

Down to the snickering of Bin Laden's metrosexual ... ahem ... impotence.

The Manolo, the vast right wing's conspiracy answer to the pinko commy Blackwell, doesn't think Osama is rocking the aging metrosexual look at all. Meanwhile, others think he looks like he is not only dyeing, but dying as well; while the rest of us find a reason to die laughing.

Sometimes it feels satisfying. But more often it seems ineffective and pointless. This blog has been more my platform for venting than an actual tool of change --lazy activism, if you will. Or maybe it's just that my interest in seeing the world change has been replaced by a deep cynicism about whether that change will happen. It takes a lot of energy to sustain anger against a cultural machine. And that anger is starting to feel more futile and self-defeating. I mean, how many times and in how many ways can you say "Fuck racists. Fuck sexists. Fuck rich people. Fuck community-destroying trolls. Fuck Republicans."?
