Words to live byI am a First Amendment absolutist and I would like to read, amid the discussion of how the Delete key should be wielded, some more nuanced discusssion than I have seen on just where anyone believes the line should be drawn in censoring the Web, blogs or any other speech. Certainly the words and images directed at Kathy are hateful and abhorrent. If a law has been broken, the accused should be prosecuted. Let's do keep in mind, however, that that person is the one who created and posted the words and images. Beyond that, I don't see what can or should be done publicly. In case anyone hasn't noticed, anonymous abusers are not the sort of people who "own their words." There are bad people in the world. They do bad things. Bad things happen to good people. Since Johnson is pro-choice and pro-stem cell research and O'Connell has a record of being anti-choice and, though she has paid lip service to stem cell research, she has proposed anti-stem cell research legislation. So she can by NO MEANS be considered liberal-leaning, but rather seems to side more with the social extremism of right wing Republicans.
Johnson is in favor of Spitzer's reforms to clean up Albany and make it less dysfunctional. O'Connell supported Spitzer's reforms before she opposed them (her current position).
So Johnson has been consistent and reasonable. O'Connell has flip-flopped all over the place.
Johnson strikes me as a Suozzi-style Democrat. Somewhat too conservative for my tastes, but a genuine conservative Democrat that can be very appealing in that district. Suozzi did some very good things and, although I didn't support him for Governor, I did have some respect for him. Johnson seems cut from a similar cloth and will be an excellent State Senator even if he leans conservative.
