Because our cultural mirror is cruel:
"Maybe this all seems funny, or trivial, but it's really not. It's about what girls want to be, what they're told they should be, and how they feel about who they are. . . I don't want them to be empty-headed, self-obsessed, emaciated clones; I'd rather they be independent, interesting, idealistic, kind, opinionated, original, funny -- a thousand things before 'thin.'
I'd rather they didn't give a gust of stinking chihuahua flatulence whether the woman standing next to them has fleshier knees than they do.
Let my girls be Hermiones, rather than Pansy Parkinsons.
Let them never be Stupid Girls. Rant over."
— J.K Rowling cheering Pink's anti-anthem, Stupid Girls
What is the IQ of the average voter?
If reading ability of Readers Digest is the norm (7th grade), is the cultural ability of voters (high school sophomore)acceptable?
I must confess I do not expect too much from the Great American Booblic. If they get their political information from Fox News and CNN, aren't they most interested in the culture of consumerism? In which case it is acceptable to worry about a candidate's hair spray and cut of pants.
And now comes a downer. In the restricted days before main frames had gigabytes of memory, words trumped pictures. Now it is not necessary to read at the 7th grade level. Just run a Youtube campaign. Think about the Coulter flap on Edwards. Her Adams Apple is the new body part of controversy.
