McCain is doomed
McCain won't get the nomination, he is doomed. His strengths were always his appeal to independent voters. These are voters who are now aligned against him on the Iraq war. He is on the wrong side of the Iraq war issue and too hawkish to get the independent vote anymore and conservatives do not like him or trust him. All those pictures of him with Bush also paint him as establishment, which disaffects those past admirers of his who thought of him as NON-establishment. All of this spells doom for him. This is not his time. This country is not going to elect a president who wants to escalate the war over there, and send more troops over. That is just not going to happen.
I could see him ending up as the vp if his buddy Guiliani is nominated, although I am still highly skeptical that Rudy G. will get it either.
One thing I do like about McCain is that he has pledged that if the Democratic opponent agrees to take matching funds in the general election, that he will as well. The one Democratic candidate who has agreed to take matching funds IF the GOP candidate does is Barack Obama.
So an Obama vs. McCain general might be the only scenario where spending could be controlled.
