Donations for the Virginia Tech Community

I did some Googling and compiled a few resources where you can donate money and send condolences to the Virginia Tech community. If you know of any other funds or venues, please alert me with a comment and I can update this entry. Thank you.

Virginia Tech has established a Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund.

You can also offer condolences, thoughts, and prayers to the victims here.

View the homepage of Virginia Tech for more information about campus events and organizing.

I pass this along hesitantly because I don't know whether or not it's been authorized or whatever precautions you're supposed to take. I spotted it on the Information on Virginia Tech Shooting Facebook page.

With recent events happening today at Virginia Tech I found my heart saddened thinking about all the families who hearts were forever wounded. As I sat in class and learned of the tragic event I looked around the room and imagined what it would have felt like if it would have been my class. Yet, even then I could not imagine how devastated this campus must be. As I spoke with friends about this ordeal we decided we wanted to anything we could to let the victims’ families know that the schools across the country sympathize with their losses. In efforts to do whatever we could we have tried calling anyone we know at colleges and universities across the nation.
We urge you to ask your classmates if then can donate just two dollars. If you don’t attend a school ask your colleagues at work to give what they can. The goal is to raise enough money to cover all the funeral costs. Our hopes are that we can bring many people together to show the families that we care and are thinking of them in this time of loss, hence we created the Thinking of You Fund. Please donate whatever you can. The plan is to send all the funds to the school by Friday so they can disperse the monies to the families to help cover costs. In order to make this possible we need everyone who wishes to donate to send the funds to us by Thursday. If you do not feel comfortable sending cash please make checks payable to Virginia Tech and the funds will be given to the school on the condition they are distributed to the victims’ families. Anything given is greatly appreciated.

Please send all funds to:

There's also candlelight vigils going on today in the area...

TWO CANDLELIGHT VIGILS IN THE NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 18

Virginia Tech in the National Capital Region will hold a public Candlelight Vigil on Wednesday, April 18, 7:30 p.m., at the Old Town Market Square, City Hall, 300 King Street, Alexandria, Va, to honor victims of the tragic events of April 16 on the university’s main campus in Blacksburg.

At 8 p.m. the same evening, The National Capital Region Chapter of the Virginia Tech Alumni Association will hold a Candlelight Vigil at St. Francis Episcopal Church, 9220 Georgetown Pike, Great Falls, Va. This non-denominational event is an opportunity for Hokies to join together and show their support to the family and friends of the victims.

The Red Cross is on hand, helping the Virginia Tech community.

From a Las Vegas Sun article:

Student organizations intend to raise money to help injured students and families of students that were killed. Donations can be made to the "Virginia Tech Victims Fund" (account number 5076063329) at any Wells Fargo Bank location.

Rebecca Bevans, president of UNR's Graduate Student Association, said student organizers will work directly with contacts at Virginia Tech to determine areas of financial need and ensure donations are made to individuals directly impacted by the incident.

"What happened (Monday) was a horrific event, the effects of which will be felt for years to come," Bevans said. "We are extremely saddened by the devastation that has been caused and wish to extend our hearts and sympathies to all of those affected."

Ryan Clark, one of the victims of Monday’s shootings, is a native of the Augusta, GA area, where I currently live. This morning, I received an e-mail from a co-worker informing me that the elementary school where Ryan Clark’s mother works is collecting donations to assist her with traveling to Virginia and making arrangements for her son’s body. If you would like to make a contribution, you can send your donation to the following address:

Words to live by

"Fix reason firmly in her seat, and call to her tribunal every fact, every opinion. Question with boldness even the existence of a god; because, if there be one, he must approve the homage of reason rather than of blind-folded fear. Do not be frightened from this inquiry by any fear of its consequences.... If it end in a belief that there is no god, you will find incitements to virtue in the comfort and pleasantness you feel in its exercise and in the love of others it will procure for you."

— -- Thomas Jefferson, to Peter Carr, 10 Aug. 1787.
