How free is speech when it costs so much?
Be it CNN or other media outlets, no one puts more money in the bank than do the recipients of advertising dollars, whether the product sold is widgets or political opinion. Without advertising, the media would have to have subscriptions and that would cost the consumer. So the consumer gets what he pays for--nothing.
The system is here to stay. What will change is customers' attitude toward it. And that goes for political advertising, be it proclaimed as such or the type in a sub rosa category. Where are the schools on teaching how monied elements carry a bias? As P T Barnum is quoted: A sucker is born every minute and there are two to take him.
