The question is not if, but when

Poor David Swanson has been informing, speaking and waiting for so long. Things have changed considerably since downingstreetmemo was started. Not quite that long since arguments pro and con were outlined by those who knew Impeachment firsthand--John Dean and Elizabeth Holtzman, for example. But I really think Nancy Pelosi did more to get the I-word into MSM than any other when she used it and said it wasn't on the table. It's on the House agenda, however, with Kucinich's 333 and according to Swanson in the article below there are now 11 Congresspersons signed on. I have a lot of confidence in John Conyers' committee. It's only to impeach Cheney, but that is the way to start. It would appear self-serving otherwise, because no Republican is going to give Pelosi a clear shot at the White House.
In my view, it is not just what elected Democrats can do, but what we all can do. When Congress goes home on recess they listen to what their constituents tell them. Local TV and newspapers largely just parrot MSM. I, for one, believe it is good to contact columnists and editors in venues away from Coasts, East and West.
It is to be realized that many people who have computers do not use them for information, especially political information. And there are many families who spend their time barely making a living but they still care a lot about the Iraq issue (because their relatives are slogging away over there). They do read their local papers. I am heartened by the change of opinion in my hometown paper, which lies in the heart of a very Republican stronghold.

Impeachment in Kennebunkport

By David Swanson

Reverend Jesse Jackson said something recently that I'd like you to repeat after me:Bush spied. Cheney lied.Far too many people have died. It's time they were tried. It's impeachment time. I love coming to Maine, because the people here remember how democracy is supposed to work and what it takes to overthrow a King George. I spoke on a national radio show yesterday about impeachment, and the host asked people to phone in and argue with me, but every single caller supported impeachment.

President Bush, like the Republicans following him today and even some Democrats...had no grasp of the new threats we faced, so he failed to offer a vision to keep us safe in a world that had changed...instead, George Bush literally gave us his father's war--but without his father's allies or his father's sense of decency.

— Senator John Edwards, at Pace University, 9/7/07
