My fault again?

I'm a Mom so I'm used to a lot of things being my fault. But not this. Not this war and not this Congress. I voted for the Dems to do something about this war, for instance. Along with that idea, I thought they understood that warrantless wiretapping was wrong.

Apparently I was the one who was wrong. They don't get it.

And most of us don't fall into either of the extreme categories you mention -- those able to attend a sit-in in the Congressman's office or those having bombs dropped on them.

But that doesn't mean we are just sitting on our couches either. Most of us work damned hard just to keep things from falling apart in real life. Then we steal a few minutes to read a blog or write to a Congressman and maybe volunteer a bit but at least vote.

And what do we get? This mess. Politicians who can't see past their next election. Pols who vote to fund a war we voted the pols into office to get us out of. Pols who vote to give a crazy President more power. Etc.

Blame me if you like. But until Congress finds its spine, I certainly won't expect anything as bold as impeachment from them. They can't even do what they were sent to DC to do.

Words to live by

"Next in importance to freedom and justice is popular education, without which neither justice nor freedom can be permanently maintained. Its interests are intrusted to the States and the voluntary action of the people. Whatever help the nation can justly afford should be generously given to aid the States in supporting common schools; but it would be unjust to our people and dangerous to our institutions to apply any portion of the revenues of the nation or of the States to the support of sectarian schools. The separation of Church and State in everything relating to taxation should be absolute."

— -- James A. Garfield, letter of acceptance of presidential nomination, July 12, 1880, quoted from Albert J. Menendez and Edd Doerr, The Great Quotations on Religious Freedom
