Let's look at that statement closely
I'll give you that this sentence is making a blanket statement about the South.
What I should have written was that they are children of the Segregationist South and that, even though they joined many others in the fight for civil rights, went it comes to survival, you're going to go back to your roots no matter what. And in their case, they're fighting for their political survival. So for me it is clear they're going to rationalize using tactics from the political culture they come from.
I come from a Puerto Rico and it was not until I came to this country did I realize was antisemite. You have to leave home to actually be able to look back at it for what it is.
It may frustrate you for me to say that Jim Crow still exists in the South, but honestly, we're just a little over 50 years from when those laws were stricken out of the books.
The Clintons are from the last segregationist generation. We really need to remember that.
BTW : Glorian Steinem and Marcia Pappas also are children of the Jim Crow era.
It may explain the age splits between Clinton and Obama voters. Most Obama voters are adult post-boomers who grew up in a more integrated USA.
