Bash John Kerry all you want -- Democrats are still going to win

Republicans know they are going to loose big time on Tuesday. So what do they do? They attack John Kerry. Yup. John Kerry is not even running for office, but he's become the target, again, of swiftboaters and the 101 Wingnut Keyboardists.

Media Matters explains:

At an October 30 speech at a campaign rally in Pasadena, California, Kerry told a group of assembled college students, "Education, you know, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq." In response to the uproar over these remarks, Kerry's staff gave reporters what they claim were Kerry's prepared remarks, which make clear that he intended to criticize Bush's intelligence -- not the troops'. From the November 1 Los Angeles Times article on the controversy:

Kerry's office said the Democratic senator had misread prepared remarks, which said: "Do you know where you end up if you don't study, if you aren't smart, if you're intellectually lazy? You end up getting us stuck in a war in Iraq. Just ask President Bush."

Kerry's explanation that his comments were a "botched joke"

As Taylor Marsh puts it brilliantly: This is what happens when a political party provides an opening for the opposition by sacrificing one of their own.

Still, it's not going to change things much. Most Democrat candidates are going to win:

While a Republican backlash against Kerry could help determine the outcome of a few razor-close congressional races, it's highly unlikely to change enough votes to determine the battle for control of Congress, analysts said.

"The impact will be very, very minimal," said Stuart Rothenberg of the nonpartisan Rothenberg Political Report. "This election is not about John Kerry. It is about George Bush and the war in Iraq."

Rothenberg said he doubted the flap would cost Democrats a seat in the Senate, though it could have an effect on a few tight House races.

"But I don't see it as a significant factor given the weight of Democratic message and overall public sentiment," he added.

Democrats need to gain six seats for a Senate majority, and they lead in six of the seven most vulnerable Republican-held states, according to Reuters/Zogby polls released on Thursday.

This is important because, even though the economy has been on the up and up, Republicans have not gained one iota of praise or political capital from it. No matter what Bush and his cronies do, the message is the same : it's the war, stupid.

And the Republican cult of corruption as embodied by Mark Foley.

And the extremism involving gay marriage and complete abortion bans.

Did I mention the mindblowing stupidity called "The Iraq War"? A war that has more than 100,000 fleeing the country for US-friendly countries like Syria and Jordan?

When it comes to adding more governors to their roster, things are looking on up for Democrats.

McCain's campaign is not about reform, I'm afraid, because he has no proposals for reform of anything. And it's not about national security, as the Palin pick proves. It's about power and the lies you need to tell to gain it. That's why this GOP needs to be burned down before it can be rebuilt.
