He has nothing to lose
Before he had to play the game or the Republicans would punish him. Now there is nothing they can do to him. He lost.
Chafee was never an ideologue and he may have hated "carrying water" for Bush's Halliburton Republicans even more than Rush Limbaugh did. Now he is freed from pleasing them. They have no more hold on him. I strongly suspect what we will now see is what he is really like.
That is my interpretation. Maybe Snowe will decide she wants to be free of the Bush Bullshit too. Maybe even pull a Jeffords.
