Agreed
I haven't known anyone who lived in Chile under Pinochet, but I did know someone who grew up in Argentina during the dirty war, a similar period of oppression by US-backed dictators. His stories were fairly chilling, basically summed up in a statement that "your friends could go out to the movies and you never knew if you'd see them again."
Spreading democracy has seldom been a high priority of America, unfortunately.
