Thank you for sharing this. I'd imagine the stories of my great-grandmothers are similar. Most of the families came from Russia during the pogroms. My grandparents (with the exception of my paternal grandfather, who emigrated from Poland to the US via Canada in the 30's) are all first-generation Americans.
My favorite possession is my great-grandmother's frying pan. I believe it is cast aluminum. I use it frequently, and think of her every time.
Matriarchal, progressive families are wonderful things!
