I've been winging it so far with the content in order to try and gage the "tone" and "interest" of the audiance. So far Liza seems to keep a close eye on things, but getting a feel for the readers is tough given limited comment participation.

I also have not yet extended a full force invite to existing readers for the same reason you indicate, although I'm also setting on a subscrided list of several hundred and daily page views of 300 - 600.

I do like the way the "Live Discussions" list updates as a new comment is posted.
