My take

Liza is the final voice of authority here, of course, but I have always assumed that each individual writer decides what is appropriate assuming no laws are being broken. I am a contributing editor and I am still winging it! I also find that I can never predict what I write will get attention.

As to readers, I have a far easier time judging the readers over at Daily Gotham. To my surprise our most read articles over there dealt with local Brooklyn politics, something I thought was going to have a very limited audience. In the many controversies that swirl like eddies in the toxic Gowanus canal, we built a strong readership and got noticed by some very important people.

Culture Kitchen has always been more baffling to me. Until recently I seldom focused on posting here. In fact I notice your presence has upped the attention I pay over here, so consider that a compliment even if it means I am plotting arguements for future posts. I get the feeling Culture Kitchen is evolving in a somewhat new direction thanks to the influx of new writers like yourself and Margaret and, hopefully, a few more I have been recruiting. This isn't a dis to the old timers. I am just happy to see more voices represented. It makes things more interesting and dynamic.

Given that anything from hard core politics to photos of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's baby have been the focus of diaries here, not to mention some very personal diaries by myself, Tara, Liza and Lorraine, I think pretty much anything goes. "Culture" is a broad topic and make of it what you will. I do.

Words to live by

The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the deadly light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.
