i beleve we have a huge issue with race in this country.
this is a very moving essay.
and...i also think it says a lot that the cop was black. that gets into two subtopics: racism occurs in every culture and background AND the fact that many cops are bullies. it is a brotherhood that is hard to penetrate. i believe that once you become a cop, you have a new family that you owe your life to and one that changes your values. my family has a lot of experience with cops. i am always hesitant and untrustworthy of them, yet i have needed their help before. i went to them a couple of weekends ago and when i walked into the station to explain my issue, one started singing, "Hello" by Lionel Richie under his breath. and i had just been the victim of unwanted advances by an asshole landlord. plus, the song sucks.
there is something about that male group mentality, though it happens with women sometimes, too.
i am sorry this happened to your friend. we need to have more discussions about race.
