We're in the middle of an upgrade

I've upgraded the site to the latest Drupal. If you come on over and look around, you will find some new interesting features. I still have a lot to do, but just wanted to put it out there for you to try and see if you figure out what's new. Also, I am going to change the design a bit. I am adding a fourth colum to the left and pulling to the front all the blogging tools you have tucked away and in your account pages. It's been very confusing to people how to post articles and were to find their blogging tools. Well, with the new collapsible blocks (oops, gave away one of the new features), we'll be able to have more stuff in the front but without the clutter. So let's make this a forum of wishlists. What do you wish for? BTW : I had to flush the cache and the logs to do this upgrade. You will notice it says there's only a few people online. That should be corrected in the next couple of hours. Also, apologies for any inconvenience the dumping of the logs and cache (and maybe anything you were writing at the time) may have caused to any of you.

GET YOUR LAZYWEB ON : A CRM better than civiCRM and as usable as Highrise?

I am in a bit of bind here, so please Lazyweb, heed my call.

I have more than 5K contacts that I need to organize and map in either discussion groups and/or newsletter mailing lists. The one program that has most of the features I want is civiCRM, but I am so frustrated with how difficult it is to install and it's clunky interface that I am all but ready to give up on it.

What I want is basically Highrise with the ability to make mailing lists and email newsletters or set up discussion groups. Heck, I'll settle for the mass-email feature as long as I can also have it organize my contacts by projects, tasks, relationships and leads. Let's not forget I have to be able to tag my contacts however I want.

And yes, it has to be web application because I need to make it possible for my assistant(s) to work on the database from the comfort of wherever they are.

Does anybody know of a program that does that? Or will I have to use a combination of programs to cobble this stuff together?

We're Busy Fixing The Site

There's going to be a lot of noise here in the next week to ten days. We're doing some major repairs and upgrades on the site that will fix the comment and posting problems we've been having in the last month.

And with that, I leave you with a time-lapse video of a construction site of 1 Bryant Park, on 4nd Street and Sixth Avenue.

Enjoy.

We're having some serious difficulties with our server

If you are reading this through RSS because you can't get to our site, please don't take it personally. We are under attack by some really bad, bad spammers and site scrappers (at least that's what it looks like at the moment).

I don't know how long this is going to last, but we're working on it.

Sad

Welcome to the ckWiki

Welcome to the new culturekitchen WIKI. What is a |wiki? Glad you asked :

A wiki is a collaborative website which can be directly edited by anyone with access to it. Ward Cunningham, developer of the first wiki WikiWikiWeb, originally described it as "the simplest online database that could possibly work". One of the best-known wikis is Wikipedia.

Words to live by

Nobody needs to be told how to use the lounge chair. "Users" of any age, background, or degree of sophistication can immediately comprehend it: take it in, in almost all of its details, at a single glance. It is self-revealing to the point of transparency, and the same can be said of most domestic furniture: you lie on a bed, put books and DVDs and tchotchkes on shelves, laptops and flowers and dinner on tables. Did anyone ever have to tell you this?

The same cannot be said of the iPod - which, remember, is one of the best-thought-out and comparatively simple digital artifacts ever developed, demonstrating market-leading insight into users and what they want to do with the things they buy. Take off your power user hat, try to imagine life without the chops you've earned over the course of your involvement with these complex artifacts, and you'll see that to people encountering an iPod for the first time it's not obvious what it does, or how to get it to do that. It may not even be obvious how to turn the thing on.

You don't have to configure the chair, or set preferences. You needn't worry about compatible file formats. You can take it out of one room or house and drop it into another, and it still works exactly the same way as it did before, with no adjustment. It never reminds you that a new version of its firmware is available, and that certain of its features will not be available until you do choose to upgrade. As much as I love the iPod, none of this can be said for it.
