Case Study: "Austin Climate Protection Plan & Dell Childrens Hospital's High Tech Energy Systems"

The City of Austin is progressive in leading the Nation in environmental stewardship. Join us to hear Cliff Braddock, Director of Energy Business Development describe the Austin's Climate Protection Plan. Then learn about an innovative on-site energy system that the City's electric utility, Austin Enegy, provided at one of its customer's sites, the new Dell Children's Hospital. Austin Energy and this new healthcare customer, have set a new standard in energy performance and environmental stewardship, with the hosptial on track to be the first LEED Platinum healtcare in the world, thanks in large measure to the Austin Energy on-site energy system.

Green Technology Breakthroughs . . .

§ Hydro Energy from Water Pipelines - Boulder, Colorado has incorporated eight hydroelectric generators with a combined rated capacity of 20.1 megawatts into the city’s municipal water system with minimal environmental impact since the water supply infrastructure was already in place. These small hydro plants convert the water pressure developed within water transmission pipelines as Boulder’s municipal water supplies are delivered down into the city from their source in the mountains high above Boulder. The turbine-generators were installed adjacent to pressure reducing valves that are necessary for proper water supply operations, but that waste this source of energy. The hydro plants generate about 45 million kilowatt-hours of electricity a year that is sold to Xcel Energy for about $2 million per year. Presenter: Carol Ellinghouse - Water Resources Coordinator, Boulder Colorado

§ Solar PV Windows of North Exelon Pavilions Chicago - Although Solar panels are now being integrated into roofing on many building, during this presentation you will learn how solar PV's have been installed as windows in the North Exelon Pavilions. Presenter: Cyrus Subawalla, Principal, Hammond Beeby, Rupert Ainge, Inc.

§ Solar Thermal to Electricity - Cool Energy, Inc., headquartered in Boulder, Colorado, is developing a solar energy combined heat and power system. The marketing name of this product is the SolarFlowTM System, and the proprietary component is the SolarHeartTM Stirling Engine. The overall system uses non-concentrating evacuated tube solar collectors to provide thermal energy to a building when heat is needed, and the SolarHeartTM Engine converts the thermal energy to electricity when heating needs have been met or when the electricity is more valuable than the heat. Presenter: Sam Weaver, President Cool Energy Inc.

Join Us in a Q&A Roundtable

At the end of the presentations, you are invited to join a question and answer roundtable where you can ask questions and contribute your knowledge on the latest developments in clean energy and energy efficiency.

But, when it came down to, this case was made into a racial issue, which it shouldn't have been. It should have been an issue about a woman who was raped by three men. Case closed.

The fact that she was black and they were white only plays into the fetishization of Black women and white men that has developed through years of inequal treatment. This also biased many people because it made this case into a national spectacle. It split people along racial lines instead of factual lines and investigating the story that the woman told instead of going on a witch hunt.

Additionally, this case was turned into an issue of class as well. The Black, poor woman was raped by the rich white kids. Many wanted to see these men be charged because they felt it would put them in their rightful place, strip them of the privilege that they had been so accustomed to all of their lives.

All of the things that this case stood for are all of the things that were wrong with the media's coverage of the case, the national obsession with the case, and the prosecution of the case. It became an issue of stripping privilege and proving that white people were not superior instead of ensuring that this woman was actually treated properly and had her CORRECT assailants brought to justice, not for political reasons but for criminal reasons.
