A sad day for equality : Michigan turns against affirmative action

A white woman's spite turns into a racist political campaign now passed into law. A law that would allow public universities and civil service departments to discriminate against minorities.

What does Jennifer Gratz think? That it will give the advantage to white women over white men?

This in from Michigan:

The ballot proposal was headed by Jennifer Gratz, the Southgate Anderson High School graduate who sued University of Michigan in 1997 to challenge its use of racial preferences in admissions.

Her case went all the way to the Supreme Court. When the court upheld the use of race as a factor in university admissions she and Connerly went to work to put the question before voters.

The passage of Prop 2 effectively overhauls the University of Michigan's selective admissions process and puts outreach, recruitment and financial aid programs for minorities and women in jeopardy. While U-M's use of affirmative action has been widely publicized, other less-selective Michigan colleges have gender- and race-specific programs and scholarships that would likely be challenged.

U-M President Mary Sue Coleman will address the university at noon today about the impact of Prop 2's passage. Leaders predict that enrollment of black, Hispanic and Native American students combined will plummet from 12-14 percent of the student body to about 4-6 percent.

A lack of diversity would spoil the overall educational experience on campus and would impair student readiness for the global economy, according to Coleman. Despite the loss, the university is still committed to diversity, she said.

"We defended affirmative action all the way to the Supreme Court because diversity is essential to our mission as educators," Coleman said in a statement late Tuesday. "We must keep the doors of opportunity open to all."

Unbelievable.

What's unbelievable? What's

What's unbelievable? What's wrong with equal protection under the law?

What's wrong with policies that prohibit racism in the use of government funds?

Private interests are free to consider race all they want when deciding where to spend or give their money. That's not what this is about.

Rather than reacting in disgust, why not look at the empirical data gathered since similar policies were adopted in California.

Of course, minority admissions went down initially. Predictably, those minority applicants that were admited on their merits were found to be more likely to graduate. Net result? Higher rate of success for minority students. That is but one example.

Hello
I just read the article "A sad day for Equality , Michigan turns against affirmative Action."
It's a sad day when Racial Discrimination is up held by any College, Company , City , Or State in the United states Of America.

At present We Have recently filed Racial Discrimination charges at the Detroit Michigan Field Office on Michigan Ave, against a Company in Perrysburg , Ohio called First Solar.

This company Terminated my son un lawfully and Discriminated against him racially. The EEOC is Notifying the Company of the charges and will get to the bottom of this .

You would think that by now Feb / 2008 This kind of injustice would have stopped , but no, it is alive and well . I hope and pray that Companies like First Solar and all other companies , Colleges , or anyone else that Discriminates against race , age, religion, etc... will wake up and stop this illegal evil behavior

If you wish rea our story at www.firstsolarbadnews.9f.com or go to www.ripoffreport.com and enter the words First Solar in the search box.

In the Beltway’s eyes, Markos leads a movement of progressives in the blogosphere. But this is inaccurate, and Markos would be the first to tell you so. Markos doesn’t lead the movement. He stands in front of it and is symbolic of it, but the movement’s direction and interests flow directly from the people who compose it. The movement is a bottom-up thing, not something that a guy leads from the top.

It’s probably comforting for Democratic politicians to believe that Markos leads the movement in the progressive blogosphere. That being the case, all they have to do is soothe the savage breasts of Markos and other rabble-rousing bloggers and then get back to business as usual. That’s why Democratic politicians are so unfailingly solicitous of the liberal bloggers.
