Hillary Clinton reaches out to 'hispanic' bloggers through ... a marketing site?

This has got to be one of the weirdest blog outreach maneuvers coming from the current crop of Presidential candidates. Juan Tornoe, of Hispanic Trending, a marketing site, has published an "interview" with the junior senator of New York and presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton.

Let's just start by clearing out the air here. Even though I loathe the word Hispanic I don't necessarily loathe the people that use it. I believe though that the use of the word contextualizes the politics of the person using it. So within the context of my previous post, make what you will of my view on the "hispanic" demographics.

That said, even though I read from time to time Tornoe's blog, I wouldn't consider it as Ms. Clinton has allegedly said in the interview, a very popular site --especially within the latino blogosphere.

I'd just as well think that honor would fall on blogs like Vivir Latino, Latina Lista, Xicano Power, Unapologetic Mexican, LatinoPundit or Latino Politico. Last place I would go for all things latino would be a marketing site, if you know what I mean.

Then of course, there's me.

I have the dubious honor to have been the first one to announce Clinton's candidacy --bundled along with the death of the progressive blogosphere-- after Peter Daou annouonced he was going to work for Senator Clinton. I also happened to be the one who critized the campaign for the professional deameanor in which they have failed to reach out to latino or black bloggers.

So, I am OK with knowing that insiders would go out of their way to dismiss me. What I find creepy, to say the least, is the inability by the Clinton campaign to engage the latino blogosphere in a sincere dialogue --even if some people like me have expressed their concerns about her possible nomination. It's as if they are incapable of dealing with dissenting opinions or even people who are on the fence about them. Their mentality is completely black and white : If you're not a cheerleader, you are the enemy.

Which is why the so-called interview at at Hispanic Trending is troubling, to say the least. I can't honestly believe the interview was actually answered by Clinton herself. The language is stilted, as if frases were taken from a rule book and stitched together into sentences and paragraphs.

Here's some examples :

Hispanic Trending: What similarities do you see between "Traditional" American Values and Hispanic Values?

Sen. Hillary Clinton: You know, I’m glad that your first question is about similarities instead of differences, because for centuries, Hispanics have been part of the fabric of our nation. So when we talk about Hispanic values, we are in fact talking about American values. The values that Hispanics hold near and dear – such as hard work, family, faith and patriotism have helped strengthen America for centuries.

Because of the contributions of millions of Latinos, America is stronger, more vibrant and more prosperous. And I am very proud to have worked over the years with so many Latinos who believe as I do in the promise of America.

Notice the writer's inability to actually answer the question. Don't they have latinos or at least people with a Latin American Studies background on staff? The fact there's not one example tells you a lot of what the campaign is incapable of understanding about the latino blogoshere.

Here's another non-sequitur :

HT: Why do you consider wining the Latino Vote important for your campaign? Can you mention three things that you are consciously doing to achieve this goal?

Sen. Hillary Clinton: Winning the Latino vote is very important to me. I’m proud of the increasing involvement in the political process by Latino voters.

The increasing involvement in the political process? Aren't more than 100 years of political involvement enough to consider us equals at the table?

Whenever a candidate "answers" that way they seem to be implying that we are always going to be driving around our vote and political influence in training wheels. WTF!

And this one :

I believe we should start by creating an education system worthy of our children. As President, I will provide access to pre-kindergarten for every four year-old in America, so they have the opportunities they need to fulfill their God-given potential.

God-given potential?

WTF!

Does she think all latinos believe in a god?

Then there's her infamous forked-tongue denial of immigration rights for laborers who don't come to the United States through sponsored employment :

I think that the broken immigration system is causing enormous hardships for those who come here legally. Processing immigration paperwork can sometimes take years due to the existing backlogs in the system. I believe we must craft a solution to this problem, so that those who come here legally can become citizens, if they so choose, in a more efficient way.

Whomever answered these questions for the Senator did a sloppy job. Yet, if these answers were actually approved by senior staff, as in Patty Solís herself, then ... wow! This interview spells más de la misma Washington mierda.

Read the whole interview at Q&A on Hispanics with Senator Hillary Clinton.

When you finish reading, come back and answer me this : What is the Hillary campaign afraid off? What is it about latino and black bloggers that they can't seem to reconcile in their outreach?

I for one take it that their effort to squeeze the more progressive latinos out of any political engagement is an acknowledgement of the potential damage we could inflict on their campaign.

Makes you rethink her inevitability : All smoke and mirrors.

The whole commercial paradigm needs to stop

This is a great post. My problem is the whole marketing aspect. The problem using a commercial paradigm is the equation of customers and citizens. It is important to see that there are fundamental differences between customers and citizens. A company caters to the needs of customers but only when and if this is in its own interest. A customer who is overly troublesome, cannot pay, threatens the organization's integrity, etc. has no right to be catered to. This is different for citizens who remain citizens no matter what. This goes back to your other post about the lack of outreach.

The central problem is that the conceptualization of humans differs fundamentally between the business world and politics. In business, people are most importantly consumers whereas, in democracy, people are predominantly citizens. The danger of the commercial paradigm is that it implies that citizens can be reduced to consumers.

XP you are so on to the point

What I found disturbing at YearlyKos was the palpable fear of a rising brown and black leadership that would eclipse the blanquitos. They want us as long as we give up our vote to them and follow their lead. The minute we say, "sorry but we're our own jefes", they go batshit. "Where are the POC bloggers". Well, they should have really said what was on their mind : Where's the POC bloggers who will do as we say, as in give us your money, give us your vote and then shut up.

Bolivia Parallel

This made me think of something I recently read on BBC about talk of civil war in Bolivia. The wealthy are arming themselves and talking of civil war because they are feeling threatened by Evo Morales' seizure of power. Although I may or may not agree with all Morales does, what struck me is that these people seemed outraged that a damned Injun was taking away their special privileges and DARING to aim for a more equitable society.

Then I find the parallel discussion in the Obama thread an interesting contrast. We are being criticized for not simply going to Obama's website if we want information about him...as if none of us thought of that and as if the Obama campaign never heard of "outreach." There is a tinge of Naderite smugness around Obama supporters...though interestingly not around Obama himself from what I can tell.

I have an even better example : Blogs owned by POC

On one of the mailing lists I was, a fight broke out because I dared to point out that a "progressive" online publication did not have one blog published by a black or latino person on their blogroll.

Several white owners of blogs took it to say that they had no POC blogging on their blogs and were offended. I insisted that they didn't count because the blogs were not OWNED by people of color. One of them was even more offended because that meant they couldn't reap the rewards of validating people of color as their contributors. It would mean then they'd have to stand as equals and even as competitors on that blogroll.

Unfuckingbelievable.

If race is an issue, your a bigot

It does not mater if your white, black, brown, or what ever… if your looking for color of skin to justify anything you’re a bigot… remember MLK… wanted us not to see color and yet I hear nothing but complaints about color and whites this and black that, or latino this… Look for quality not color… look for a proven track record not color… Look for the MLK dream and you will see its about all of us, its NOT about obama….

First of all, nice blog! You

First of all, nice blog! You seem knowledgeable, so I have a question for you.

I know this probably won't pertain to your post, but it's the quickest way I could think of to get people to help me!

I'm new to this internet marketing thingy, and would like to make some money and fast!

With all the gurus out there, it's confusing. I have very little money to start out with,

BUT I DO have an idea.

I wouldn't mind doing some affiliating, but who do you trust? I saw a guy name Ewen Chia, and he said he has a free website builder and that it's worth $197. BUT, guess what? I found out that it's a freeware program and he just added buttons inside of it that sell his products. He lied, so I'm not going to trust him.

Then, there's this guy...I don't know who he is...but I don't want to waste any money. I included the link in my post. He seems genuine, BUT like I said...I don't want to waste money, because I don't have much at all to start with.

Would you mind checking the website and letting me know if I should order that and if it seems authentic?

AND/OR, give me suggestions/names as to who I could trust? I would appreciate it very much.

This stuff is confusing! Any tips on marketing for a newbie that bring INSTANT results?

Thank You,

Eddy

Q Mr. President, there has been a bit of an international outcry over reports of secret U.S. prisons in Europe for terrorism suspects. Will you let the Red Cross have access to them? And do you agree with Vice President Cheney that the CIA should be exempt from legislation to ban torture?

PRESIDENT BUSH: Our country is at war, and our government has the obligation to protect the American people. The executive branch has the obligation to protect the American people; the legislative branch has the obligation to protect the American people. And we are aggressively doing that. We are finding terrorists and bringing them to justice. We are gathering information about where the terrorists may be hiding. We are trying to disrupt their plots and plans. Anything we do to that effort, to that end, in this effort, any activity we conduct, is within the law. We do not torture.
