In defiant abuse of power, George W. Bush frees criminal Scooter Libby

George W. Bush commutes Scooter Libby's 30-month jail sentence for lying under oath and obstruction of justice in the Plame Case. This proves that he not only runs the White House like a mafia but, if he could, he would whack all of Congress and run a totalitarian government.

Raw Story reports:

Libby did not receive a pardon, but he did have his 30 month jail sentence commuted by President Bush. He remains guilty of the felonies of perjury, obstruction of justice, and making false statements in the federal investigation of the outing of covert CIA agent Valerie Plame Wilson. He will also pay a $250,000 fine.

I challenge any republican to justify this move and try to rationalize it as anything other than being a good Xian. This is the biggest F**k you Bush could have given to Congress. As John Conyers' said, "this decision is inconsistent with the rule of law". With this commuting Bush is sending a strong message that he approves of lying under oath and breaking the law for political gain.

Nancy Pelosi also has some harsh words for Bush:

The President’s commutation of Scooter Libby’s prison sentence does not serve justice, condones criminal conduct, and is a betrayal of trust of the American people.

The President said he would hold accountable anyone involved in the Valerie Plame leak case. By his action today, the President shows his word is not to be believed. He has abandoned all sense of fairness when it comes to justice, he has failed to uphold the rule of law, and he has failed to hold his Administration accountable.

Yet, my biggest question leads me back to the matter of impeachment : If this doesn't move Democrats to start proceedings on both the President and Vice-President, then what will?

So?

FU to the nation and what is Congress going to do about it? Bitch and moan as usual? Or will they actually figure out how to do something?

They didn't have to fund this war. But they caved.

Now what? In the face of corruption, thuggery and complete contempt for the law, do they get it now? This administration is not going to play by the usual rules.

Will they step up or will they just issue press releases?

The question is not if, but when

Poor David Swanson has been informing, speaking and waiting for so long. Things have changed considerably since downingstreetmemo was started. Not quite that long since arguments pro and con were outlined by those who knew Impeachment firsthand--John Dean and Elizabeth Holtzman, for example. But I really think Nancy Pelosi did more to get the I-word into MSM than any other when she used it and said it wasn't on the table. It's on the House agenda, however, with Kucinich's 333 and according to Swanson in the article below there are now 11 Congresspersons signed on. I have a lot of confidence in John Conyers' committee. It's only to impeach Cheney, but that is the way to start. It would appear self-serving otherwise, because no Republican is going to give Pelosi a clear shot at the White House.
In my view, it is not just what elected Democrats can do, but what we all can do. When Congress goes home on recess they listen to what their constituents tell them. Local TV and newspapers largely just parrot MSM. I, for one, believe it is good to contact columnists and editors in venues away from Coasts, East and West.
It is to be realized that many people who have computers do not use them for information, especially political information. And there are many families who spend their time barely making a living but they still care a lot about the Iraq issue (because their relatives are slogging away over there). They do read their local papers. I am heartened by the change of opinion in my hometown paper, which lies in the heart of a very Republican stronghold.

Impeachment in Kennebunkport

By David Swanson

Reverend Jesse Jackson said something recently that I'd like you to repeat after me:Bush spied. Cheney lied.Far too many people have died. It's time they were tried. It's impeachment time. I love coming to Maine, because the people here remember how democracy is supposed to work and what it takes to overthrow a King George. I spoke on a national radio show yesterday about impeachment, and the host asked people to phone in and argue with me, but every single caller supported impeachment.

Congress

Let's hope the members of Congress remember the messages from home by the time their vacation is over and they are back in DC.

Sure, doesn't everybody get a week long vacation in July??

And another. And another. And full health coverage. Etc. Riiiight.

Let's see them earn those perks!
