MALDEF says Eva Longoria-Parker is a civil rights sheroe? Who knew!

Eva Longoria

So I received another press release that made me do a double take. MALDEF or the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund is having an OMFGGIVEUSMONEYNOWLOL! awards gala sometime in November and there were two "celebratees" (yes, i know am making that one up) that caught my eye.

First up, Eva Longoria, Desperate Housewives' own Chicana Warrior Princess. She seems to not only plunk a lot of money for a variety of Latino causes, but also does the walk by raising awareness about the plight of immigrant farm workers:

Eva Longoria Parker will be honored with the Community Service Award for her commitment to Latino civil rights and activism. Ms. Longoria Parker is the founder of Eva’s Heroes, a charity that helps developmentally disabled children. For years, she has been a supporter and top charitable contributor to several Latino and civil rights organizations around the country, such as the United Farm Workers of America and the Dolores Huerta Foundation. She is an executive producer of Shine Global Inc.’s upcoming documentary, The Harvest, which sheds light on the exploitation of 500,000 child migrant farm workers in the United States. She is a dedicated supporter of many other organizations, including PADRES Contra el Cancer and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

That documentary she's executive producing was what caught my attention. Let's see how they address migrancy as a result of US's Latin American policies; especially NAFTA.

Then there's the mention of Anheuser-Busch for being "the largest corporate contributor in fund-raising efforts for the Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF)". I find that really interesting for probably the most famous officer of the company: Cindy McCain.

The company's getting an award for corporate social responsibility. Ah ... hmmm ... ok. Budweiser and MALDEF: Interesting bedfellows. I wonder how they translated "Wassuuuuuuuuuuup?!" in Spanish.

Here's the partial 411:

QUOTES

Lying on my cot, I came to the point that many people reach in a situation where they stop what they’re doing and say, "Wait a second. This is bullshit. This isn’t right." Two guys in our battalion were dead, two families ruined. And try as I might, I couldn’t figure out what the purpose of that was.

Things that had been welling up inside me all summer suddenly exploded in my head like a dozen Roman candles. I hated the president for his ignorance. I hated Donald Rumsfeld for his appalling arrogance and his lack of judgment. I hated their agenda. I hated Colin Powell for abandoning the Army—for not taking care of his soldiers—when he could have done something to stop these people. I hated them because the Army had seen this insurgency coming. I hated them because they didn’t listen to the people who told them this was a bad plan. I hated them because now, it meant that my guys could be next. It meant that I could be next. And I didn’t want to die like this—not in a confusing mishmash of ideologies, purposes, and bullets.

I felt like we had been taken advantage of. We were professionals sent on a wild goose chase using a half-baked plan for political reasons. Lying there restlessly, I was reminded of a Schwarzenegger line in one of his movies—when, after being used and lied to, his muscle-bound character had expressed perfectly what was now on my mind: My men are not expendable. And I don’t do this kind of work.

I longed for the clarity of purpose we’d had in Afghanistan.
