Unintentionally racist moment brought to you by CHOIRE SICHA

Whether he likes it or not, Choire has become enough of a fixture of the post-Gawker online publishing world to be considered part of the New York City media elite. And he's white. So it's no surprise I hurt my eyes rolling them after reading what is obviously intended to be a clever little throw-away post for him in What Were Black People Talking About on Twitter Last Night? | The Awl:

At the risk of getting randomly harshed on by the Internet, I cannot keep quiet about my obsession with Late Night Black People Twitter, an obsession I know some of you other white people share, because it is awesome. The only reason that White People Twitter knows about Black People Twitter is because when you white people wake up on the East Coast or when you go to bed late on the West Coast, the trending topics are hilarious chat-memes, ruling the trending topics, and yes, last night's was the very funny #uainthittinitright.

"Late Night Black People Twitter"? Really Choire, really?

It really goes downhill from there for what he implies: That Twitter is a late-night sambo review where he and other white people get to see "teh blacks in the wild" talking amongst themselves.

I actually wouldn't argue that by having no "friending" barriers, Twitter is an open social experiment that could have a positive social impact along racial lines. The problem though is that Choire doesn't get that "teh blacks" are not being funny because they're being black without them noticing him "in the room". They're being funny because they're fucking around at midnight trying to make stupid shit trend on Twitter.

It's like a sport bro' and it's supposed to be funny and smart. I think your people call it, "WIT".

Worse though is the assumption that "teh blacks" are only African Americans. This is what really takes the cake. And this is not a problem just with "teh whites" in the United States. This is really just a USA problem in general: there's "teh whites" and there's "teh blacks" and then there's everybody else. Even African Americans are guilty of speaking of "blacks" as if it only pertained to them and as if there were no other blacks in the whole fucking HEMISPHERE of América if not the whole goddamn world. But that is a part of AFRO-AMERICAN PRIVILEGE that we'll have to intersectionalize at another time.

In the meantime, let's go back to Choire and his "white geek" friends: Geezus fucking kites in a handbasket, your invisible backpack is showing. Just go to a quiet corner and unpack that shit.

QUOTES

To the Chinese, freedom is a threat. To the right wingers, criticism of the Catholic Church was a threat. To some folks in Missouri, the fact that I continually bring up issues related to Johnson's shut-ins is a threat. Exactly how do we define a level of 'threat' in this new Gestapo brave new world? Is it in the eye of the beholder?
