Le Français Zinédine Zidane, exclu lors de la finale perdue contre l'Italie (1-1 après prolongations, 5 TAB à 3), dimanche à Berlin, a été désigné meilleur joueur du Mondial 2006, a annoncé lundi la Fédération internationale de football (FIFA) sur son site Internet.

Le capitaine de l'équipe de France devance, avec 2 012 points, les Italiens Fabio Cannavaro (1 977 points) et Andrea Pirlo (715 points).

Le meilleur joueur, ou Ballon d'or du Mondial, a été désigné par les journalistes accrédités pour suivre la 18e édition de la Coupe du monde : ils avaient jusqu'à dimanche minuit pour voter. La liste des dix nominés, dressée par le groupe d'étude technique de la FIFA, comprenait, outre Zidane, Cannavaro et Pirlo, les Français Patrick Vieira et Thierry Henry, ainsi que les Italiens Gianlugi Buffon et Gianluca Zambrotta.
