Spreading the News: Feminist Blogger Denied EC, Gets Pregnant

This story is working its way around the web, but imho it's not moving fast or far enough yet. I believe that it deserves to be reposted here on CultureKitchen, for obvious reasons, and to get as much other online exposure as possible.

The following is quoted verbatim from egalia's post on the finestkind femblog produced by the fine folks from the Tennessee Guerilla Women, and includes links to her other online sources as well:

Blogger Denied EC, Gets Pregnant

Feminist blogger Biting Beaver has courageously shared her story about being denied emergency contraception in rural Ohio and then getting pregnant.

This is what happens when you live in a country ruled by delusional religious zealots who prefer for women to be treated like breeders, or chattel from the 19th century.

If Margaret Sanger were alive today, she'd be setting up illegal clinics to dispense illegal birth control. But those were the good old bad days when repressive laws and customs inspired civil disobedience.

Amanda over at Pandagon writes:

Well, bad news, everyone. Biting Beaver, who was brave enough to tell us all her horror story about trying to obtain emergency contraception in rural Ohio but only being able to get it basically as the window of opportunity was closing, has discovered that she didn’t take the EC in enough time and she is indeed pregnant. She’s announced that she’s going to get an abortion, which, as Violet Socks points out, will probably just escalate the abusive comments and emails Beaver’s getting from men who are just so damn concerned about the sanctity of life that they have to tell her she’s a whore and a cunt and she deserves to die.

Leave it to the sick 'culture of life' crowd to spew hate and even death threats!

Everyone in the chain that prevented Biting Beaver from accessing EC in a timely manner should be named in a lawsuit.

She could use some emotional and financial support. And in my view, we could all use a modern day Margaret Sanger.

Ginmar over at A View from a Broad and Lindsay at Majikthise have more.

I don't know about y'all, but this kind of arrogant reich-wing Rethuggery really pisses me off.

BB's doctor -- a woman, if that matters -- should have prescribed what BB needed right then and there, instead of just punting her problem to the local emergency room, where she was not only refused treatment but was roundly ridiculed in the process.

Changing the laws that allow such bodily-bullying to happen is one important step, but changing the culture is what it'll take to keep women from being treated like property (again).

So what are you slash we gonna do about it this time, hmm? Inquiring minds (and bodies) want to know.

Denial of EC

Watch South Dakota! A repressive law was passed against the will of quite a few of the people. I used to live in South Dakota.

Watch the repressive law get taken down, hopefully. People like Fallwell consider South Dakota a bellwether state re taking Roe v Wade down.

Let's hope South Dakota is a bellwether state in terms of people taking back the law, instead of taking down Roe v Wade.

South Dakota

The South Dakota general election will include a referendum on whether their repressive abortion ban should be overturned to at least allow abortion when the woman's life is in danger.

In South Dakota, it's hard to even get emergency birth control. Jerry Fallwell has been haunting the state like a bad ghost. For ten years, abortions have been done by doctors flying in once a week from Minnesota, as doctors in South Dakota do not perform them.

I went to college in South Dakota. When my old University calls and asks me for money, I give them a stern lecture!

There is alot people from all 50 states can still do to help the situation in South Dakota. They are depending on our state, and we're depending on the people of South Dakota, as it's considered the bellwether state by those who want to overthrow Roe v Wade. We can't let this happen.

QUOTES

The truth is that as a woman, a woman of color, and specifically an African American woman, the insults come so fast and furious that there’s always the danger of becoming overwhelmed and de-sensitized.

Sad to say, but I’m used to hearing black and brown women being call “bitch” “ho” “skank” “skeazer” “gold digger” or some variation of all of the above in popular songs and music videos. “Norbit,” Eddie Murphy’s current movie, may be the most recent example of a black man putting on a dress and playing the fat, ignorant, loud, brown-skinned black woman as an object of ridicule and revulsion, you can bet it won’t be the last. And check out “Flavor of Love,” VH1’s hit show in which women demean themselves in an effort to get Flava Flav - brought beneath low since his high as a member of the seriously political rap group Public Enemy - to choose them.

What these three have in common is that they demean black women, earn handsome profits for their corporate sponsors, and for the most part exist devoid of criticism.
