For Our New Jersey Readers: Election Guide

Here are some Congressional races I want to focus on:

NJ-07 Congressional Race:

Democracy for America endorsed Assemblywoman Linda Stender for Conrgess in the NJ-7 district. Stender is standing up against Big Oil and standing up for working Americans. You can learn more about Linda here. You can volunteer for Linda here.

Here is Linda Stedner's latest ad:

NJ-05 Congressional Race:

This seat is currently held by Scott Garrett, who is widely considered far too much of a right wing extremist for his New Jersey constituents. Garrett is one of the Katrina 11, the 11 Republicans who opposed aid to Katrina victims. Garrett opposed renewal of the Voting Rights Act and he supported oil drilling off New Jersey’s coast, both very unpopular stands in New Jersey. He is anti-union, anti-choice, anti-Katrina victims and about as right wing as you can get.

Dr. Dennis Shulman is the Democratic nominee to take on Garrett. Renowned author, educator, Rabbi, and clinical psychologist, Dr. Dennis Shulman has dedicated his life to serving all segments of the community. Dennis Shulman has been endorsed by the New Jersey State AFL-CIO and has been selected by the DCCC as a strong challenger. You can learn more about Shulman here.

The following I modify from Daily Kos:

In NJ-3: Senator John Adler began the race as a the money favorite, but aware of the challenge even for an open seat in a District anchored by Republican stronghold Ocean County. But, recent polls show Adler may finally be breaking through, and with the cash on hand to finish things out - I think this race has edged past NJ-7 as our most likely pickup. Here is Adler's latest ad:

Burlington County Times and The Courier-Post have endorsed Adler. As have Atlantic City Press, Cherry Hill Courier-Post, NJ Fraternal Order of Police, NJ State Policeman's Benevolent Assoc., Professional Firefighters Assoc of NJ, National Association of Police Organizations, National Jewish Democratic Council PAC, Sierra Club, Planned Parenthood and many others.

In NJ-4: Josh Zeitz has surpassed all expectations, with fundraising in the half-million dollar range, and an aggressive campaign that has not let up for a moment against another Republican incumbent who enjoys the unearned support of big labor. He needs to overcome dismissive treatment by the MSM and the PR miracle Chris Smith landed earlier in the campaign. But, this is another swing district, and with the benefit of increased turnout and a strong top of the ticket, it's a District that DC dems may regret not paying closer attention to.

Chris Smith apparently wants to eliminate birth control:

You can read Josh Zeitz's stands on the issues here.

Words to live by

The way to fight this 'moving forward' frame is not to repeat it--that's the first step. The problem is, Americans want to talk about and correct all the problems the President created and we are in right now. And if we talk about 'moving forward' and looking up the road and turning points--we get distracted from the present.

To reframe, we should force the debate to use a new phrase:

America wants action right now!

This phrase focuses the discussion in Iraq, on immigration policy, on oil policy, on hurricane preparedness--focuses attention on the real concern: a government that fails to act in the face of huge problems.
