Harry Reid Breaks the Republican Filibuster
So, Harry Reid just stood up to the Republicans. He basically gave them the choice of going on record as stopping the first minimum wage increase in 10 years, something that may not go down well with working class voters, or to shut up. They shut up. The minimum wage bill will go to a vote soon and should pass.
Problem is, in the process the Republicans did get a chance to tack on several odious amendments giving yet more tax breaks to the wealthy and such. But we'll see what gets through on the final bill.
I still urge you to write your Senators and the media and give your opinion.

I think 3 things are going on
First off, with all their warts and neuroses, Democrats are the party that for a long long time has done the best for the middle and working classes. So having them in the majority is going to increase the number of good things being said and done.
But secondly, I don't believe in a one-party system...ANY party. I think there does need to be a rivalry between the two parties. Obviously I like having Dems in the ascendency. But having an alternative out there keeps the Dems on their toes. I only wish that the current Rep party was more reasonable...which brings #3.
I think there are a lot of reasonable, moderate Republicans who consider the Dem take over a breath of fresh air. Moderate Republicans were made to toe Bush's party line and they weren't happy about it. Now they can define a middle ground between Bush's extremist right wing view and the Democrats. In other words, they can start representing more traditional Republican values, rather than the extremist values of Bush and DeLay.

How
encouraging! And I was just watching NY Senator Chuck Schumer touting his new book on helping the middle class. Most startling of all, we have a Republican governor here in FL who is actually trying to help with homeowners' insurance -- help homeowners that is, no just the insurance companies. Maybe something good will come of all this.
