Hate Speech is for LOSERS!

One thing that is sure to get your ass banned from Culture Kitchen is hate speech. Not only is it disgusting and contrary to our policies, but it is also pathetic and labels you as a complete and total loser.

We just had a Nazi anti-Semite come and post some crap about Jews and Jewish conspiracies. Sadly, in the process he used a book that is perfectly innocent of his intolerance yet is too easily used by people with small minds for a purpose its author never intended. The Thirteenth Tribe, by Koestler (a Hungarian who was, like me, a borderline atheist, moderately Zionist Jew). This was a very interesting and speculative book that suggests that the kingdom of the Khazars, the ruling elite of which had converted to Judaism, is one of the origins of Ashkenazi Jews. It is an outdated and largely disproven hypothesis that is nevertheless well worth a read. But narrow-minded Nazi sympathizers use it to claim that Jews do not have ancient roots but are, rather, merely Europeans with no link to the Middle East. The evidence for a Middle Eastern link for Jews is overwhelming, and, in a huge irony, points to a common origin for both Jews and Palestinians. Extremist Jews and extremist Palestinians tend to deny each other's validity, despite this clearly common origin.

But that isn't even my point. My point is, Nazism, racism, anti-Semitism and pretty much every kind of hate speech is nothing but a disgusting sign of deep insecurities. I consider the use of hate speech to be symptomatic of a very small intelligence, a small penis, or some other deep deficiency that a person cannot face up to, so has to create a myth of superiority that requires the denigration of others. A person with a modicum of intelligence and self-confidence can cope with their deficiencies and live happy, productive lives despite whatever problems or handicaps they might have. But some people cannot face the fact that they aren't some kind of super-person, and, in a perpetuation of adolescent self-importance, has to believe that they are always right and anyone who is different from them must be sub-human.

This Super-Human/Sub-Human myth that underpins hate speech is almost always a myth that is covering up deep insecurities.

The particular Nazi who started posting here was a clear example of this. He used a single, outdated, speculative book to "prove" his point, unable to comprehend the wide range of data that prove him wrong. His only way of coping with the flood of data proving him wrong is to stick with his original thesis and to spout anti-Semitic conspiracy theories. The biggest irony is that in his profile the only bit of personal info he gave was a statement that he is smarter than you...presumably referring to all readers of Culture Kitchen. There in he reveals personal information he did not intend to reveal, because that statement doesn't say anything about his being smart but merely reveals his deep insecurity over his intelligence. In discussing things with him it was rapidly clear that his knowledge and ability to reason were superficial at best. Yet rather than learning, he has to create this myth that denigrates all who disagree with him, particularly Jews. His only other statements, other than Nazi crap, were anti-gay or pro-Ron Paul. I suspect that, like one of our Hillary advocates who saw Elizabeth Edwards' cancer as a sign from God to anoint Hillary, this Nazi's advocacy for Ron Paul would not be welcomed by his campaign.

I banned the loser Nazi from this site. It was my first banning and I am happy I did it. Culture Kitchen is many things to many people. But it is NOT a platform for losers to self-congratulate themselves by portraying others as sub-human. This is NOT a place for hate speech. We leave that kind of loser crap to Ann Coulter, Bill O'Reilly and other such creeps. We will always and consistently tell Nazi punks to fuck off.

Still up

I believe his comments are still up in both the "But Is It Good For Israel?" diary (where he finally got banned for saying Jews=Nazis) and in the "All the Presidential Candidates Are Cowards" diary where he bashed gays and expressed love for Ron Paul. I am for leaving up his comments with our, shall we say, appropriately acerbic responses, though we may ultimately make an editorial decision to delete them.

About

damned time.

We all have better things to read and think about and act on.

What is everyone else doing to protest the war this weekend? I am writing to legislators but feeling like that is completely useless.

Well...

I wanted to see just how much of an idiot he really was. I have on rare, RARE occasions run into anti-Semites who with a bit of talking to turnout more reasonable. Even in a place like San Diego, California ran into that sort. And the Khazar/Ashkenazi link is an interesting topic. I like to give evidence and see how people respond. ONce he responded to scientific data by saying Jews bankrolled Hitler, well...that was about the end of THAT.

Won't get the chance for war protests. We have our regular family chores plus I will be meeting with Majora Carter (featured in John Kerry's book) to discuss local NYC issues. Locally she's becoming quite the rock star in the fight for improving our communities and I am lucky to get a chance to meet her in a small group.

Dear gods and goddesses...

What an absolutely atrocious little man. That's such a sad sight, the crap he spewed and the spectacle he made of himself. I would say I felt sorry for him, but I don't. People like that get everything they deserve, and then some, from within the social sphere. Most people won't put up with that crap.

You did the right thing, in my opinion.

You should see...

You should see the crap he's trying to post now! He really DOES seem to believe in the Protocols of the Elders of Zion and he is getting increasingly personal. Of course I am simply deleting his stuff, but I am imagining his computer screen getting increasingly covered with his spittle as he rants and raves in a more and more frantic frenzy of hatred.

I would feel sorry for him because I know he really is simply an insecure, pathetic little fool. But I also know the damage his kind of hatred can cause. It is precisely people like him who feed into the skinhead movements around the world and it wouldn't surprise me if he has vandalized synagogues or mosques to make himself feel more like a man. He isn't just pathetic. He is dangerous as well.

I'm not aware of...

Protocols of the Elders of Zion, and I haven't yet read the books of which you speak. I shall see if my library has a copy. Your image of him, spittle and all, matches mine. Lately I've seen far too much of this sort of thing on the internet. It seems to be escalating, and I'm not sure why.

Certainly internet ambush has been around for a long time. People say things because they can remain anonymous and therefore, free from any societal banning. I'm beginning to wonder if that's why they do it, really. I frequent a gaming forum, and some of the worst offenders reside there. They take pot shots at people they don't know for no apparent reason.

The skinhead movement has scared me since I first heard of it. The more I know about it, the more it scares me. I'm not Jewish, but I have Jewish acquaintances. These groups are no great comfort to them either.

I don't feel sorry for him. I feel outrage and anger that people such as him exist. I feel shackled, too, for not being able to do anything about them, just as I do with the forum trolls I see -- although those are mostly harmless, I think. As you say, this gentleman and his ilk -are- dangerous

Agreed

This has been increasing. Which should be expected.

The Protocols of the Elders of Zion was a piece of Tsarist Russian propoganda to stir up anti-Semitism. It was supposedly a work written by Jews on how to take over the world. It was the origin of the "International Jewish Conspiracy" myth. It was later shown to have been written by the Tsar's secret police. Some still believe it was true and use it as evidence that Jews are plitting to take over the world.

The following video is a

The following video is a hilarious satire of the "Elders" and negative Jewish stereotypes. The performer of the song is Rav Shmuel, who is a Hasidic Rabbi/Dead Head (I know it sounds like an oxymoron) who performs at the Sidewalk Cafe in the East Village pretty regularly.

Great!!!

That rocks!

And wasn't Jerry Garcia a Hassidic Rabbi? Well, he SHOULD have been : -)

Dead/Hasidic connection

There actually is a Dead/Hasidic connection.

One of the Chabad Houses in SF was nicknamed the Dead Head Chabad. If a Dead Head stayed at that Chabad over the Sabbath they were given free tickets to a non Sabbath/Jewish holiday Dead show.

The Dead Head Chabad Rabbi also influenced Lollapalooza and the bands Jane's' Addiction and Porno for Pyros frontman Perry Farrell (given names is Peretz Bernstein). For a short period of time Perry became semi-observant donning Tefelin (The black straps Jews put on their forehead and arm when reciting weekday morning prayers)regularly. During that time Farrell also released a solo album of Kabbalah inspired music.

Although it doesn't appear that Farrell maintained his religious observance for long, he did headline Purimpalooza in 2006.

Not related to the Dead (at least the band), but to Hasidim and an interesting although under publicized movement within Judaism, is the Renewal Movement.

Renewal is a modern (ie non-orthodox)blend of Hasidic spirituality and progressive social action.
Chris Ownens's blog links to one of its institutions, the Shalom Center.

Although I've never attended a Renewal Service I've been told B'nai Jeshurun in Manhattan (bj.org), which I've never attended either, is the closest Synagogue in the area to Renewal in practice. BJ started out affiliated with the Conservative Jewish movement but now positions itself as non-denominational. Two of its 3 Rabbis have Conservative Ordination and the other received her's from a Reformed movement institution.

Wikopedia offers a a primer on the Renewal movement.

Words to live by

Sometimes it feels satisfying. But more often it seems ineffective and pointless. This blog has been more my platform for venting than an actual tool of change --lazy activism, if you will. Or maybe it's just that my interest in seeing the world change has been replaced by a deep cynicism about whether that change will happen. It takes a lot of energy to sustain anger against a cultural machine. And that anger is starting to feel more futile and self-defeating. I mean, how many times and in how many ways can you say "Fuck racists. Fuck sexists. Fuck rich people. Fuck community-destroying trolls. Fuck Republicans."?
