Maria Shriver Endorses Obama
A short time ago I predicted California will go for Hillary Clinton, though perhaps narrowly enough that the delegate split will be pretty close. Well, developments may prove me wrong. Obama has an increasing shot at California.
With California a statistical dead heat between Obama and Hillary, three endorsements could put Obama over to victory. The Los Angeles Times, La Opinion...and now Maria Shriver (the Governor's wife) all have endorsed Barak Obama. Shriver's endorsement comes unexpectedly when she showed up at a rally at UCLA.
I have been putting my money on Hillary even as I endorsed Obama. The recent wave of endorsements all over the nation means I consider it now even odds. There is no longer a front runner. Obama has caught up. Tuesday will tell whether Hillary's more traditional, and, I assure you, very effective ground game will pull it off or Obama's momentum and ever expanding coalition will win. Either way, this is what making history looks like.
Election 2008 | primary | Barack Obama | California | Maria Shriver
Shriver
Shriver has always been pretty inependent. As a Kennedy and Shriver, she has far more political credentials than Arnie and has always been liberal, though hasn't always displayed it if it conflicted with her husband's career as a Republican.
Of course my brain exploded when she first married him. I'm just glad she kept her wits about her since then.
She keeps him honest
Most of the time. I wrote on Kos that it was HER that brought his candidacy for Governor some credibility and "gravitas", and helped him win. He was caught up with his Republican handlers from 03-04 and seriously got trounced in a special election where nurses, firefighters and police unions busted his chops and defeated all his slate of referendums.
He learned humility, and started listening more to her, bipartisan groups in the State Senate and Assembly, and with an impending threat of Warren Beatty considering a run in 05, he was told by Beatty that what he needs to get him to back off is if he becomes "more of a Democrat".
Maria gives him those creds. By and large, he's ok as a governor, though I am grateful we do have a large majority of Democrats in the Assembly and Senate. The CA Republican party is as hopeless a cast of misfits ever ganged up in a hole. They need to stay there. They are truly a gaggle of pathetic losers. Look at their leaders, Darryl Issa. Dana Rohrbacher. John Doolittle. Say no more.
So Maria has absolutely NOTHING TO LOSE in this endorsement. The state's been pushed to the brink environmentally with the current EPA blocking CA's bid for higher standards in vehicle emissions. If the gov doesn't do something soon, one of his promises to this state to be more of a Democrat evaporates.
Maria knows what she's doing.

My head just exploded
I honestly don't know what to make of this endorsement --are the Schwarzenegger-Shrivers covering their bases by endorsing the two people who they think will end up nominated?
Or is this like the most automous First State Lady ever?!?!?!
Seriously, I'm ferklempt.
