Alito is confirmed 58-42, but moral victories are not enough

This from People for the American Way:

PFAW HAILS STRONG TALLY AGAINST ALITO – SECOND-HIGHEST IN HISTORY
Notes Moral Victories are Not Sufficient

Following today’s vote to confirm Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court, People For the American Way President Ralph G. Neas had the following statement:

“Today’s 58-42 vote to confirm Samuel Alito represents the second highest number of votes against a confirmed Supreme Court nominee in the nation’s history. The vote represents an extraordinary effort by the progressive movement which, despite daunting odds from the beginning, never gave up, made a compelling case against confirmation, and rallied several million Americans to contact their senators to oppose Alito. People For the American Way, which generated 600,000 faxes and e-mails to the Senate in just the past several days, praises especially those Senators who did everything possible to oppose the confirmation of Judge Alito.

“But moral victories are not sufficient. People For the American Way pledges to intensify its grassroots mobilization to safeguard the constitutional rights and liberties of every American. Most importantly, progressive Democrats, Republicans, and Independents must work to ensure that someday soon there will be a progressive Senate that better represents the values and beliefs of a significant majority of the American people.

Alito is confirmed 58-42,

my Dem Senator, Ron Wyden, voted for the filibuster, as did quite a few other senators who usually do things the "proper" way. this is more than a moral victory. this is a show of power from the 'roots, and i think we need to trumpet loudly how this vote went. 41 Dems & 1 R told Bush he had picked the wrong guy for the Court -- and many of them did so because they heard from their constituents.

which means we own this victory. yes, this awful man is on the Supreme Court and Roe is toast and things are going to be pretty terrible, the worse SC since FDR took office. but this was set in stone the day Ohio was delivered for Bush in 2004. yet we don't walk away from this with our tails between our legs. Bush gets to pretend he did a great thing getting Alito on the court, but the country knows better. we know better. this is another sign that things are changing, and for the good. we -- the grassroots, the ordinary citizens learning to do politics to save our country -- are learning that we make a huge difference. this takes us closer to a victory in November -- if we run with it.

"When a religion is good, I conceive it will support itself; and when it does not support itself, and God does not take care to support it so that its professors are obliged to call for help of the civil power, 'tis a sign, I apprehend, of its being a bad one."
