Lydia, our little red-haired angel, is gone

Lydia, my eight year-old niece is dead. No parent should ever see their child die before their eyes, but that's exactly what my sister-in-law and her husband went through this morning.
I don't have all the details but my niece Lydia was killed in a storm-related accident while camping. A storm hit their campsite at 2am this morning, knocking out a tree that crushed the little angel's life out.
More details here.
Lydia died while her mom tried desperately to clutch with her hands to her life. Unfortunately, neither she nor her husband could not move the tree and had to wait to be assisted by the state park's emergency unit.
The most horrible part of the story is that they were all sleeping in the same tent when this happened. The tree only hit Lydia. My in-laws were not harmed.
My kids saw me and their father crying. They don't understand they will never see their little cousin ever again. Unfortunately, my in-laws are not holding a wake, so the loss may never sink in.
I can't imagine the pain my SIL is going through. Lydia was her only child.

I can't begin to imagine how this has to hurt. My best wishes to everyone.
This is the part
where I fear the blogosphere really can't substitute for more traditional human warmth and support. But we're all here, and will be here when you come up for air. Hold your boys very close and never mind us for awhile --

Oh Lord, just terrible. You and yours are in my prayers.
How horrible
How gut- and heart-wrenching. I'm so sorry to hear this happened. As awful as it would be to watch your child die, I take some small consolation in knowing that Lydia had her parents with her at the end.
The world has lost a lovely little girl.
I came over here from the BlogHer CE list; I think you did the right thing to bring this up there.
I'm so sorry for your loss.
Words cannot express how heartbreaking this story is and I can't even imagine what pain your family is going through. I have an almost 6 year old daughter and I just want to hug her tight. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this most difficult time.
Losing your niece
Sorry about the loss. My prayers are with you.
My Prayers are with you
i am a student Minister in Trinidad and I was preparing to visit a family on Monday who lost their 26 yr old Son one year ago. The Mother is still in a mess. I cannot answer qustions as to why things like this happen and cause us so much pain and hurt. We want so much to go on as normal and wish that a tragedy never took place.
I beleive that our loved ones are with our Creator, we are spiritual beings first, housed in a fragile body. Once taken up we are happy being back with our God. Lydia has been embraced and taken by the Angels to her true home
I pray that you are comforted, i know it is hard! God Bless you all and your Family
It is my prayer that you know that God is present in all our trials and comforts us by His presence assuring us that we will allone day be reunited with Him and oour loved ones.

Your Niece
How horrible! I cannot even begin to imagine the pain your family is going through. Nothing can prepare you for these kinds of tragedies.
My heart and prayers go out to your sister and her husband, as well as the rest of your family.
