A Day Without Immigrants - Rally
Jobs With Justice, SEIU, and several other human / workers rights groups organized and gathered with thousands (I don't know the count yet) of people to walk from SW 3rd and SW Jefferson to the World Trade Center in Portland today. "Si Se Puede" was heard for miles and many drove by giving thumbs up, honking and waving as the crowds of Latino folks (sprinkled with a couple white people) cheered and chanted. A better sound system would have been helpful at the beginning and end because no one could hear what was going on.
Lucy, with "Latina" written in glitter on her forehead. Her sign saying, "Roses are Red Violets are Blue. Without Mexicans what would white people do?"
Question: When did the problem of illegal aliens start on this continent? Answer: October 12, 1492 Illegal Europeans have been a problem for us for 500 years.

feel free to
I think my favorite in the whole set (it speaks to me) is the one with the three restaurant workers watching as the march comes toward them...feel free to use 'em how you want to
"We can survive without illegals" day.
I, personally, am looking forward to "we can survive without illegals" day. A wonderful day when everyone in the NoVA area realizes that the traffic lights still work, businesses still open, the government still drags on, and life it pretty much exactly the same as it was the day before except that, instead of illegals standing around waiting for some richard-head in a pickup truck to come by and hire a handful, they'll just stand around and flip off cars and drink, and generally act like normal.
All of the "legals" will be at work, working for a living -- like the rest of us -- and paying taxes, putting up with government spending, and having to listen to the monotonous drone of the tv talking-heads tell us how tragic the day was (not).
Unfortunately, there will still be mis-guided youth skipping poorly run government ("public") schools to protest issues that they don't understand, but they weren't learning anything useful anyway -- just how "bad" the United States are, and how "unfair" it is to expect people to obey the laws, pay taxes, be respectful of others, and how evil it is to have pride in America.
Will MY day be any different? No. Will I need to bus my own table? I do anyway. Will I need to take out my own trash? I do anyway. Will I still pay taxes, pay medical bills, pay for schooling? Yes, same as usual. Which I guess will be the theme of the day: "A day without illegals is like... a day without illegals."
The gov't will continue to pander to anyone they think will listen. Both sides of the main party will whine and complain about the other, and promise to give away more of our tax money in benefits to those who don't pay taxes. They will both wind up cheapening citizenship, making all of the hard work that legals went through mean absolutely nothing.
It ain't nothin' but another day.
I'm so glad you're sharing
I'm so glad you're sharing your thoughts with me!
There is much I could respond to and ways I see things much differently than you do. I think it deserves a lot of thought and time that I'd like to put into a future posting.
What I'm really interested in is how you are feeling as you're writing this?
It sounds like you've had some negative experiences that kinda bummed you out about whole groups of people.
Hope you'll email with the details...
Why should we give away
Why should we give away citizenship when other immigrants have worked their asses off for years to live and work in this country? This 'boycott' caters to ignorant, what does that say about the strategy?

Edited by me and bumped to the front page
I am going to use Jeff's pics too for another post, unless someone else wants to go ahead and post them.
