What Eva Braun Saw in the Darkroom
Not exactly a face that would make most women swoon.
When Eva Braun was a teenager, she worked as a salesgirl in the shop of the official Nazi Party Photographer, Heinrich Hoffmann. Eventually, she began working as his photography assistant and it was in his darkroom that she first glimpsed the man whose paranoia, gastrointestinal agonies (do the research), and "Vitamin B" shots caused the death of millions.
She fell in love with a face that only a (blind) mother could love. Yeah, yeah, I know...I have slept with men who are unconventially sexy, but I doubt anyone in their right mind would classify Hitler as such. He suffered from constant bouts of noxious gas, had terrible taste in clothes, and quite frankly, that whole trying to take over the world thing just doesn't work for me.
I imagine Eva standing in a darkroom as she watches the glow of his face form into an image that captures her heart. Now, I have no idea if it happened this way or not, although it is documented that she met Hitler in this shop and because Hoffman was the official Nazi Party Photographer, she did see photos of Hitler before she met him. As a woman, I can almost guarantee she was already drawn to him through the photos.
Think about all of the women you know that have been drawn to that kind of caustic charisma. Women such as:

He publically announced that she is going to hell for following the wrong sect of Christianity, yet this woman bore him 12 1/2 kids. So she's good enough to stick a dick in, but not good enough to share an afterlife with because she doesn't follow the Almighty Road Warrior Battle Plan for Admittance to Heaven that these conservatives demand.
Why are people so full of hate GIVEN power?!? And what woman in her right mind wants to be with a man like that? I see many of them in politics and Hollywood, little Background Bitches who would just go along with anything, including an underground bunker double suicide. I am sure some of the intellectual snobs reading this would say my questions are elementary, but hey, fuckin' read another blog. Ask yourself why these men get away with killing six million Jews or scaring a whole police force into lying about a drunk driving arrest.
I know the two are not the same, but the manipulation to accomplish such deeds originates from the same source.
My first reaction to Mel Gibson would have been to tell him to shut the fuck up and step back, son. I would have said:
"Shut...The...Fuck...Up."
His wife should tell him the same thing.

Shut the fuck up would've been the first string of many cautionary tales to share with the likes of Mel. Or, uhm, Hitler. Altho interesting vantage point to expect these women to somehow find a voice for themselves when their choices have been one of back closets, "wrong" religions and darkrooms. I suspect they're going to have trouble meeting your call.

God, my first response was lame. sounded like 'ole Eva for a minute there.
i want accountability. i want people to stand up for themselves and others. i am an idealist but i believe that these ideas can be put into realistic action. yeah, an idealist. i am also an asshole, but that's another blog.
at some point, when you see these abhorant behaviors taking root...like after the first blockbuster...you gotta speak up. people can only hide for so long behind the excuse of their childhood or own insecurities as an explanation of why they don't speak up. someone would have to be coming from a seriously abusive situation for it to be a legitimate excuse. and then i an not even sure if it acceptable if that person is not crazy. it is a risk to speak out against something, but life is not living wo that risk.
i think many people get comfortable and don't want to rock the boat. you must step outside of your circle of comfort.
so, thanks again. i like the correspondence.

eloquent idealism, if nothing else, but I think your expectations of accountability are realistic as well and can be empowering -- the concept of actually holding individuals to make sense of themselves (their pysches, their hold ups, their weaknesses) rather than be caught in situations as victims. victims even when - as you pointed out - they might not necessarily be such. and now I'm just restating you.
stepping outside of your circles of comfort, tho, can happen in small ways or big ways. mebbe mel's wife raged holy hell on the homefront, even going so far as to risk the pearl necklace for the successful birth of their 13th child? mebbe she threw down and said, 'get your ass in rehab....again'. my guess is that, no, she didn't, but it's hard to gauge where the standing up for yourself happens when you're not the public part of the relationship.
eva braun, we could have a whooole separate discussion about her trite ass waiting on the sidelines like a Lakers groupie, but for another discussion.

Brilliant and blog fucking damnit! A good question as well. I am not anyone to judge people on their choice to stay in a marriage for one reason or another but in this case ... lawd! If he indeed has said she is going to hell for being in the wrong side of the catholic tracks, then, honestly, what is there left to say.
It's just insane and quite frankly, I do believe Catholicism is institutional psychosis.
People often forget Hitler was an avowed Catholic who acted on his madness with the blessing of the Vatican.
