New York City geekettes get ready for "She's Geeky East"

She's Geeky NYC Attention women of New York City : If you are in the technology, media, finance, non-profit, marketing or education fields and are looking to network and brainstorm with like-minded women, then She's Geeky East is for you.

It will be two-and-a-half days of unconferencing.

Yes, it will be an unconference.

(Take your time.)

You don't know what an unconference is? Ah, well, let me use Kaliya Hamlin's own words to describe it. She is not only an expert on this sort of "brain swap" gathering, she also happens to be the founder of She's Geeky.

"An unconference is a facilitated participant-driven face-to-face conference around a theme or purpose. [ ... ] The name "unconference" arose to describe conferences that step outside of the more traditional model -- that is, presentations selected months beforehand, sponsors buying speaking slots, boring panels of talking heads, and high fees."

Not being able to use little US girls as guinea pigs, Bush goes after immigrants

Think Progress just discovered that the Bush Administration is forcing HPV vaccines on immigrants :

In July, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services quietly amended its list of required vaccinations for immigrants applying to become citizens. One of the newest requirements? Gardasil, which vaccinates against the human papillomavirus (HPV). From the agency’s press release:

CDC’s revised Technical Instructions to Civil Surgeons for Vaccination Requirements require the following age-appropriate additional vaccinations to adjust status to legal permanent resident:

* Rotavirus
* Hepatitis A
* Meningococcal
* Human papillomavirus
* Zoster

This regulation goes directly against the advice of Dr. Jon Abramson, chairman of the CDC’s advisory committee on immunization practices. In Feb. 2007, Abramson said that he and other committee members advised that Gardasil should not be mandatory because HPV is not a communicable disease like chicken pox.

Engage Her and make sure she casts a vote in November

69% of Latinas do not vote. Even though we have the highest pregnancy rates and the fastest growing incidences of AIDS in the United States. 70% African American and Asian American registered voting women also abstain from voting.

Pass on this video clip to every single, Black, Latian, Asian, Native US American woman you know and ask them to pass it on to their family friends.

Faced with the prospect of a McCain presidency that would squash any hope of Universal Health Care and would put on the bench Supreme Court Justices that would bring back reproductive slavery, it is absolutely necessary that each and every minority woman and man go out and vote.

From the EngageHer blog :

Sarah Palin : A lipsticked pitbull that's a scaredy cat with the press

The LA Times reports that La Palin is being embargoed by the McCain campaign on account of the republicanos not believing it is in their best interest to have her speaking to the press.  In other words, they're afraid she's going to make a mistake as Todd Harris says in the video above; because she is not ready to give her opinion on anything a Vice-President could conceivably be involved as co-pilot of the President of the United States.

This is supposedly the woman who will be a heartbeat away from the presidency and who could most possibly succeed in office the 72 year-old John McCain. This is not just another GOP and John McCain strategic blunder. It is down right scary anybody would think this woman is ready to be POTUS.

In which Ms. Steinem redeems herself

That "Somebody stole my shoes, so I'll amputate my legs" bit is pure gold :

Selecting Sarah Palin, who was touted all summer by Rush Limbaugh, is no way to attract most women, including die-hard Clinton supporters. Palin shares nothing but a chromosome with Clinton. Her down-home, divisive and deceptive speech did nothing to cosmeticize a Republican convention that has more than twice as many male delegates as female, a presidential candidate who is owned and operated by the right wing and a platform that opposes pretty much everything Clinton's candidacy stood for -- and that Barack Obama's still does. To vote in protest for McCain/Palin would be like saying, "Somebody stole my shoes, so I'll amputate my legs."

Y'all know how pissed off I got after La Steinem wrote that horrid anti-Obama Op/Ed for the New York Times and that my beef with her is just not new. This time around she serves her purpose well for, indeed, all what Palin and Clinton share is nothing but a chromosome. Yet Ms. Steinem needs to go further.

QUOTES

Politics are not the answer for black people, never have been, never will be. Been knocking on that door for too long now...nobody has answered...STOP knocking!

This is not to say that some well-meaning but, misguided, black people have not attempted to promote change through these channels but...c'mon people...it aint workin'

I would also like to add, that black people are NOT a monolith. There is room for a plethora of opinions, discourses, methodologies, and passions in the struggle...HOWEVER...there is no room for self loathing and the loathing and mistrust of other black people.
